For a 2-day trip from Fez to Merzouga (Sahara), you’ll cover a long but rewarding route. Here’s what you’ll typically see and experience, day by day:

Day 1: Fez to Merzouga (erg Chebbi area)
  • Morning departure out of Fez: leaving the Fez plain, you’ll drive through olive groves, rich farmland, and small rural towns.
  • Pass through the Middle Atlas foothills: rugged scenery, pine forests, and occasional Berber villages.
  • Ifrane/Northern Atlas feel: a clean, Alpine-style town with neat parks and cedar-shaded streets (easy to spot if you take a shortcut through the cedar forests near Azrou).
  • Cedar forests near Azrou: chance to see Barbary macaques along the roadside if you’re lucky.
  • Imouzzer Marmouzet/Masse area stops: traditional Berber towns and viewpoints.
  • Mid-morning to afternoon drive across valleys and gorges: dramatic rock formations and sweeping landscapes.
  • Erfoud and Erfoud-to-Merzouga corridor: you’ll begin to see Saharan terrain creeping in—stony plateaus and desert-adjacent landscapes.
  • Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga: arrival at the edge of the Sahara, with towering sand dunes. Sunset views over the dunes are a classic highlight.
  • Evening in Merzouga: camel ride (optional but popular) to a desert camp or nearby dunes for a night under the stars, traditional music, and a Berber meal at the camp.
Day 2: Merzouga (Sahara) back toward Fez or onward
  • Sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes: a stunning color display as the sun rises over the sands.
  • Optional activities: 4×4 desert excursion, visiting the village of Khamlia (Gnaoua music), or riding a camel for a shorter dawn ride.
  • Descent from the dunes: depart Merzouga and head back toward Fez, retracing or slightly rerouting through Hassan II’s desert-adjacent landscapes.
  • Scenic desert-to-highland transition: you’ll move from dune seas to rocky plateaus, then back through cedar/Atlas-adjacent landscapes as you approach the Middle Atlas.
  • Expected drive time: roughly 10–12 hours of driving in total (if you’re returning to Fez the same day) or split into two days with an overnight in a town along the route (e.g., Erfoud or Rissani) for a more comfortable pace.
Practical tips
  • Distances: Fez to Merzouga is a long drive; a 2-day itinerary usually involves a long Day 1 drive and a shorter Day 2 return, or an overnight in a desert camp to optimize time.
  • Pace: if you’re short on time, consider a private transfer or an organized tour that streams the route efficiently.
  • Climate: mornings and evenings in the desert can be cool; pack layers. Daytime can be hot, especially near Merzouga.
  • What to bring: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, camera, a light scarf or shawl, and a small water bottle.
  • Health and safety: ensure you have a reliable vehicle, or choose a reputable tour operator with experienced drivers. Camel rides can cause soreness if you’re not accustomed to it—go slow and listen to your body.

Would you like a precise, step-by-step itinerary for your exact dates, with driving times, potential stop points, and recommended camps or towns for an overnight in Merzouga? If you share your preferred start time, mode of transport (private car, shared tour, or bus), and whether you want to include activities (camel ride, 4×4 excursion, visit to a Gnawa village), I can tailor a detailed plan.
